X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory offers the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of instrument development and astrophysical research. With us you can discover how scientists design and build the X-ray collecting detectors, which are then launched on board NASA's space missions. You can also participate in analyzing the data from these novel instruments to explore the nature of the energetic Universe.
The opportunities in instrument development includes groups involve building low temperature detectors, X-ray optics and gas detectors. These will allow you to learn life skills. There are opportunites for students to work in our laboratory both during summer and longer term.
The opportunities in astrophysical research involve working closely with Goddard scientists to use observations from satellites such as XMM-Newton, Chandra, NuSTAR and Nicer, and to learn about black holes, neutron stars, galaxies, to name a few. You can also help with preparations of missions that will launch in the coming years. Apart from learning astrophysics, you will also develop strong programming skills, teamwork, and communication skills, both oral and written.
The Goddard Space Flight Center X-ray group welcomes students to participate in our research, either for the summer or longer term. A primary way of finding research opportunities is through: intern.nasa.govand NASA Fellowship Activity
If you are interested in working in the Goddard Space Flight Center X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory, or if you have any questions, please reach out directly to the specific group or person or contact us .
Graduate students can apply for standalone summer internships here If your doctoral research overlaps with our expertise, a short to long term research visits can be arranged. A first step is to contact us. We have adjunct faculty and administrative ties to local universities.
Fellowships can also be obtained thru finesst
We have cooperative agreements with many local universities in the DC/Baltimore area. If you are a student at any of these institutions, we can help arrange a research opportunity at X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory.
We host postdocs through the NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP). We also provide postdoc positions administered through our cooperative agreement with local Universities. Contact us!
