    Dr. Charles Ichoku is a Research Physical Scientist with the Climate and Radiation Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He is actively involved in the development of innovative remote sensing approaches for global characterization of fires, their smoke emissions, and atmospheric aerosols in general, as well as evaluating their impacts on the environment and climate. However, his activities over the years have included developing and applying both experimental and remote sensing approaches to research in various branches of the earth sciences, including geology and geodynamics, hydrology, and atmospheric studies. He has won several NASA individual and group achievement awards, and has published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

    Research Interests

    Fire Energetics and Emissions Research (FEER)

    Quantitative characterization of biomass burning processes and impacts from space-based, airborne, and ground-based measurements to improve the understanding of the global distribution, causes, seasonality, and overall impacts of biomass burning. This involves a comprehensive analysis of energy release from fires as measured by remote sensing and it's relationship to biomass consumption, smoke plume injection, and aerosol and trace-gas emissions.

    African Environmental Processes and Water-Cycle Dynamics

    Coordination and active involvement in interdisciplinary research to unravel the relationships between the various environmental processes in sub-Saharan Africa and the water cycle dynamics. We seek to quantify the impact of land-use activities, including the extensive seasonal biomass burning across the northern sub-Saharan African region (bounded to the north and south by the Sahara and the Equator, respectively), on various elements of the water cycle in that region, including soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and eventually, precipitation.

    Atmospheric Aerosol Remote Sensing

    Contribute meaningfully toward a more complete scientific understanding of the atmospheric aerosol phenomenon through remote sensing from space, validation using ground-based and airborne measurements, multi-sensor uncertainty analysis, and application to model evaluation.

    Brief Bio

    Dr. Charles Ichoku is a Research Physical Scientist with the Climate and Radiation Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He is actively involved in the development of innovative remote sensing approaches for global characterization of fires, their smoke emissions, and atmospheric aerosols in general, as well as evaluating their impacts on the environment and climate. However, his activities over the years have included developing and applying both experimental and remote sensing approaches to research in various branches of the earth sciences, including geology and geodynamics, hydrology, and atmospheric studies. He has won several NASA individual and group achievement awards, and has published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
