Brief Bio

Paolo de Matthaeis received the Laurea degree (Summa cum Laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Italy. After graduation, he was with the European Space Agency at ESTEC in The Netherlands under the Young Graduate Trainee program, and then with the Remote Sensing Laboratory at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata". He earned a Doctor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and then he started working at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, as Research Associate and where he is currently Research Scientist. His research interests include active and passive microwave remote sensing, with a focus on electromagnetic modeling of vegetation, land and sea surface, and detection and mitigation of radio frequency interference (RFI). He was part of the Science Algorithms Calibration/Validation team for the Aquarius instrument and is now part of the team working on sea surface salinity estimation using SMAP. Dr. de Matthaeis is member of the U.S. National Committee (USNC) for URSI and IEEE Senior Member. He was co-chair of the IEEE GRSS Frequency Allocations in Remote Sensing Technical Committee (FARS-TC) from 2013 to 2017 and has been its chair since July 2017.
