Brief Bio

Dr. Rachael A. Kroodsma is a Research Physical Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center with the Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory (Code 612). Her primary responsibilities include leading the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) inter-calibration working group (XCAL) and serving as instrument scientist for the airborne microwave radiometers CoSMIR and CoSSIR (Conical Scanning Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer and Configurable Scanning Submillimeter-wave Instrument/Radiometer).

Current Projects

GPM XCAL

Remote Sensing

The GPM XCAL team is responsible for delivering the intercalibration tables for the GPM constellation microwave radiometers to create the Level 1C dataset. The XCAL team works on developing intercalibration techniques and monitoring the calibration/stability of the current sensors in the constellation to ensure a quality precipitation product.

CoSMIR and CoSSIR

Remote Sensing

The GSFC airborne radiometer suite of CoSMIR and CoSSIR together provide measurements from 50 to 684 GHz. CoSMIR has frequencies from 50 to 183 GHz and has flown in multiple field campaigns on the NASA DC-8 and ER-2 aircraft, first providing SSMIS calibration/validation and then participating in four GPM ground validation campaigns. CoSMIR is currently part of the multi-year IMPACTS campaign to measure snowfall on the East Coast. CoSSIR is currently being upgraded to have all dual-polarized channels from 170 to 684 and is planned to fly in the 3rd year of the IMPACTS campaign in 2023. CoSSIR is well positioned to provide validation for upcoming spaceborne missions that include a submillimeter-wave radiometer (e.g. ICI and AOS).
