Positions/Employment

Lead Research Scientist

SSAI - Greenbelt, MD

August 2012 - Present

Supports NASA GMAO scientific research program on seasonal-to-decadal climate prediction using coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice-land-surface models.

  • Maintains the coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice analysis system, runs routine (monthly) ocean and sea ice data assimilation global analysis to produce the initial conditions for the seasonal forecast. Creates and maintains pre- and post- processing scripts, in particular, computes the statistics of the data assimilation system performance, generates graphics for the ocean climate web page and prepares output for the collaborative projects, including GODAE OceanView framework and NCEP CPC Real Time Multiple Ocean Reanalysis Intercomparison.
  • Participates in testing and analyzing the new ocean analysis system, isolating and defining its problems and deficiencies, such as build-up of excessive sea ice thickness or incorrect local river runoff.
  • Tests and analyzes the impact of the new types of satellite observations. Recently the effects of including the ocean color data into the ocean data assimilation systems were assessed. The results of the experiments on assimilation of the chlorophyll concentration demonstrated the improvement of the sea surface temperature and upper ocean heat content analysis skill.
  • Supervised the long term (50 years) coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice integrated ocean data assimilation system (iODAS) experiment, assimilating ocean and sea ice in-situ and satellite observations using multivariate using ensemble optimal interpolation (EnOI) method, providing initial conditions for the decadal hindcasts.
  • Studied the newly available remote Aquarius sea surface salinity (SSS) data, assessed its potential usability for oceanographic data assimilation; collaborated with the data production team on using GEOS-5 model to calibrate and validate the data.
  • Evaluated sea surface height (SSH) long-term trend based on the analyses and hindcasts, including attribution of its variability to the various components of the water volume balance in the ocean.
  • Produces visualizations, presentations and manuscripts based on the results of the scientific investigations.

Research Scientist

Wyle - Camp Springs, MD

November 2009 - June 2012

Supported NOAA/NWS/NCEP Climate Prediction Center research effort to improve the prediction and monitoring activities.

  • Investigated various ensemble forecast schemes for seasonal prediction.
  • Investigated seasonal predictability based on the ensemble characteristics.
  • Run R2 atmosphere and MOM4 ocean assimilation and model scripts for data denial experiments, evaluates various metrics of the assimilation skill in relation to the data availability and model variability.
  • Conducted the CFSR assessment and validation study using the independent data from the OCS, comparing the reanalysis heat fluxes with the COARE-corrected fluxes with the in-situ fluxes at the KEO mooring location.
  • Analyzed and prepared data as required for the reanalysis research studies.

Principal Research Analyst

CACI - Lanham, MD

November 2005 - November 2009

Research and Development work at the Knowledge and Information Management Division in the area of image recognition and document analysis.

  • Major projects: allocation of a signature in a digital image, recognition of Arabic handwritten text, multilingual text annotation, machine translation and OCR testing and evaluation, African languages technologies.
  • Worked on all stages of the most projects, including proposal writing, planning, implementation, final report preparation and presentation to clients.
  • Investigated, tested and developed tools for image preprocessing and optical character recognition (OCR), including quantitative analysis of the image properties and OCR performance dependency on image characteristics.
  • Developed an annotation tool for linguistic corpus analysis for multiuser multidocument setting.
  • Coordinated activities of a group of native speakers of African languages for tools testing and data collection.

Scientific Programmer/Analyst

SAIC - Greenbelt, MD

June 1997 - November 2005

Supported NASA GMAO scientific research program on seasonal-to-decadal climate prediction using coupled ocean-atmosphere-land-surface models.

  • Developed and assessed performance of the Optimal Interpolation data assimilation algorithm with multivariate forecast error covariance for oceanographic assimilation of in-situ and satellite data.
  • Coded numerical approximation methods for components of the ocean and atmospheric models.
  • Wrote and run scripts for routine forecast ensembles as well as sensitivity experiments and research investigations with the Poseidon quasi-isopycnal ocean model.
  • Produced visualizations of various physical variables and other quantities representing model state, data or assimilation statistics, always striving for creativity and clarity in presenting visual information.
  • Performed scientific analysis of data and model-generated fields, including temporal and spatial statistical tests, numerical

ESSIC, Graduate Research Assistant Department of Mathematics, Graduate Teaching Assistant Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology, Russian-English Translator Athletic Department, Tutor

UMCP - College Park, MD

October 1994 - May 2001

  • Performed scientific analysis of data and model-generated fields with the focus on the Pacific Ocean inter-annual variability.
  • Lead the discussion sessions for the Elementary Calculus course. Participated in the Teaching Assistants seminar.
  • Translated the book “3D problems in the non-linear theory of elastic bars” by A. A. Ilukhin.
  • Assisted student athletes in mathematical courses, helped students develop a systematic approach to their academic work.

Consultant

Battelle, Columbus Operations - Waashington, DC

February 1996 - July 1997

Analyzed the relationship of the game theoretic equity concepts to the interpretations of equity employed in contemporary highway cost allocation studies. Prepared the technical report “Applicability of the Non-atomic Game Theory to the Highway Cost Allocation Problem” for the Federal Highway Administration.
